“They killed a Mockingbird”
Oil paint and collage on canvas

This work was inspired by Harper Lee’s canon piece ‘To kill a Mockingbird’. The reader is told that killing a Mockingbird is sinful, as the Mockingbird is innocent of any crimes and only intends to share its’ beautiful music with others. I also chose to include the silhouette of an Indigenous Australian man and I collaged pages from Oodgeroo Noouccal’s poem ‘We are going’ to draw a link between the issues of Racism and Inequality that exist in both Nation’s histories. The symbolism is both powerful yet beautiful and I hope that viewers can appreciate the narrative that this combination of stories has created.
