“Cream and coffee”
Oil paint on canvas

‘Cream and Coffee’ is the final product of an in depth investigation and collection of the human appearance through its altered stages of age and ethnic background. This artwork was inspired by a statement made by Gandhi featuring the question often asked concerning his religion, his reply being; “I am human.’ This is the ethical dilemma of discrimination that is featured within the art piece. Through the altered stages of age (wrinkles, sun/age spots, loosening of skin, coarse rough skin, hair change –loss of hair/colour change etc.) a person’s appearance takes on a different form. These small differences seem to have a huge effect in the ethical dilemma of discrimination. ‘Cream and Coffee’ presents a combination of altered ages and ethnic backgrounds that affect a person’s appearance and smeared them all together through delicate attention to detail. This has in effect created an unusual, ugly looking man, with strange changing features that bring into focus large eyes. These bright green eyes act as windows to symbolize a common feature that is present through all ethnic backgrounds and ages ‘We are all the same person on the inside’.  This art piece was designed to confront people with the concept of similarities, which can be seen within each and every person, regardless of appearances. This was expressed through the altered stages of age, which change a person’s physical appearance, and the altered differences between races.
