“Sudden Grasps”
Manipulated digital photograph

I wanted to portray the idea of our sometimes wanting to be in two places at the same time, being in two conflicting states of mind at the same time, but still being in the same body. I explore these ideas of internal turmoil by depicting the same person interacting with themselves. This work uses the idea of portals, transportation and going to a fantasy place in our heads. I used the idea of a metaphorical portal/window into another world and then portrayed myself interacting with this in a physical way. In this instance the portal is through a tin of wafers and the subject (me) doesn’t have a choice about going into the alternate place. The aggressive grabbing depicted by the hand emerging from the portal is representative of the sudden, unexpected places life takes us and the conflict within our-selves this can cause.
